About the Book

“Mountains to Cross: Finding Life’s Purpose in Service” is a deeply reflective and inspiring new memoir by Dr. Abraham M. George, a former soldier, entrepreneur, and humanitarian leader whose life spans continents and callings…

Mountains to Cross is a riveting memoir that traces an extraordinary journey—from the battlegrounds of the Himalayas to the high-stakes world of Wall Street finance, and ultimately to transformative social impact in India. In this deeply personal and thought-provoking narrative, Dr. Abraham M. George chronicles how professional and financial success led not only to comfort, but to a calling. At the height of his achievements, he made a life-altering decision: to redirect his resources, experience, and conviction toward those at the margins of society. More than a memoir, Mountains to Cross is his reflection on responsibility, leadership, and the moral dimension of success. It challenges conventional definitions of achievement and shows how education can serve as the most powerful long-term equalizer. The book offers both an intimate personal story and a strategic blueprint for building a life anchored in purpose, compassion, and measurable impact.

About the Author

Dr. Abraham M. George began his professional journey as an artillery officer in the Indian Army, stationed at the Se La mountain pass on the India–China border, then the highest battleground in the Himalayas.

After a brief military service, he moved to the United States, earning two master’s degrees and a PhD in business administration from New York University. He went on to build a distinguished career in international corporate finance and entrepreneurship.

In 1995, at the peak of his professional success, Dr. George made a decisive choice to return to India to serve communities at the bottom of the social and economic ladder.

His initiatives include founding Shanti Bhavan, a pioneering residential school providing world-class education to children from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and establishing a rural hospital serving 15 villages.

Dr. George also played a pivotal role in India’s public health reform by helping remove lead from gasoline in April 2000 — a landmark achievement in environmental and public health policy.

He has served on the boards of Human Rights Watch and the International Center for Journalists, and has received numerous honors, including the Hind Rattan award. He is the author of six books—three on international corporate finance and three chronicling his social impact work.

The rewards of turning a life of success into one of compassion in actionare worth the risk.
